Who the f**k is 'mustang'?

Whilst browsing my network the other day I came across something that I'd never seen before.. a device named 'mustang'.. "Who the f**k is mustang" I said whilst hitting the Print Screen button..

A 'copy and paste' of the MAC address and a quick check just to be on the safe side.. confirmed this is indeed an Amazon device.

What 'Amazon' device? I don't have any 'Amazon' devices, I hate smart TV's with their spying potential and wont have one. Same can be said for these smart speakers, Echos, Alexia's, Home's to name a few, always listening and recording what you say.

I tried to create a shortcut on my desktop for the illusive 'mustang' although that didn't exactly work..

Yes the shortcut was created but the path (location of device) was non existent, which is unusual and I've never seen anything like this in the past. It got me Googling like a good one, here's a few of the links that I discovered and found helpful..

It turns out that without an actual IP address it ISN'T actually on your network, but scary none the less.

O.K. so my paranoia is now easing some-what, it's something to do with a Windows update screwing with your system. Hell that never happens does it (sarcasm) and to resolve things you need to disable 'Windows Connect Now Service' on your PC and then disable WPS on your router. You can read how to do both of these things here:

With these two factors done and dusted 'mustang' hasn't been seen again since. But what is 'mustang' and where did it come from?

Great questions and I'd love to have the answers for you but I am clueless myself. I did discover a little more about the Amazon device which can be seen below,
